Our WDFL team welcomed second placed Avonmore to Whitegates this morning in a premier league game. Disaster struck for Rovers as early as the first minute when the Rathdrum side went one up. Rovers took control of the game after the early setback and should have been level on fifteen minutes. From a corner Rovers had three bites of the cherry from point blank range but three times the Avonmore keeper blocked, how it didn't nestle in the net is a mystery. On twenty five minutes it looked again like Rovers were going to level matters, Jack Crowley hit a thunderous shot from the edge of the area which looked destined for the top right hand corner but the Avonmore keeper pulled off an unbelievable save. On thirty three minutes Ian Murphy pulled off an excellent save to keep Rovers in the game. The sides went in at the break with Avonmore one up but on the balance of play in the first period Rovers should of at the worst been on level terms. If Rovers were the better team in the first half it was definitely the visiting team who were on top in the second half. Like the first half Avonmore scored early to double their lead and they never looked back after that. On fifty two minutes Avonmore struck the bar when a certain goal looked on the cards. They did add a third on the hour mark when they sliced open the Rovers defence. Things got worse for Rovers five minutes from time when they were reduced to ten men. This will have to go down as a bad day at the office but things could have been different if they had have took their chances in the first half when they were on top. But credit to Avonmore they came out for the second period all guns blazing not allowing Rovers a foothold in the game to secure all three points.
