Our Leinster Senior side welcomed league leaders Skerries Town to Whitegates this afternoon and after losing 5-1 away to them early in the season the lads were hoping to turn the tables this time round. Rovers were playing against a stiff breeze in the first half and to their credit they handled the conditions well. Rovers kept the ball on the deck and created three good chances, the best of these falling to Ciaran McGettigan who saw his effort cleared off the line on twenty five minutes. The Rovers rearguard of Jim Foley, Mick Delaney, Paul Newsome and Rikki Quinn were excellent throughout the first period and on the one occasion they were breached Rossa Marron in the Rovers goal came to the rescue with a fine save three minutes before the break. Rovers got off to a dream start three minutes into the second half. Jim Foley played Ciaran McGettigan in down the right wing, Ciaran made a surging run to the end line skipping past the defender and then pulling back an excellent pass to find the incoming Sam Brown six yards out who made no mistake to fire home to give Rovers a deserved lead. This seem to signal a bit of urgency in the league leaders play as on fifty five minutes they tested Rossa Marron with an effort but Marron was equal to it with a brilliant stop. On the hour mark Marron was called on again but yet again he showed his goalkeeping skills pulling off a fantastic save to preserve his team's lead. Both teams were reduced to ten men in seperate incidents as the second half heated up. With a minute left on the clock Ciaran McGettigan made a great run on to a long ball but was denied by the keeper. Deep into injury time disaster struck for Rovers when Skerries were awarded a penalty which looked a little harsh. Up stepped the Skerries striker but he fired his effort wide of the post. A minute later the referee brought the game to an end with Rovers claiming all three points in an impressive team display. This was an excellent 1-0 victory against the league leaders. There were impressive displays all over the pitch today with three or four players deserving the man of the match award but on this occasion it goes to Rossa Marron between the Rovers posts for three excellent saves at crucial times of the game. By giving the accolade to our keeper it might seem the lads were under pressure but nothing could be further from the truth as Rovers were the better team on the day and deserved their victory, it was just those saves were top class and at 1-0 they were crucial.
