Our WDFL Premier team welcomed Wexford side Glynn Barntown for a second round Leinster Junior Cup game under the Whitegates lights tonight. It was the away side that got off to a great start when a mix up in the Rovers defence led to the opening goal. Rovers had the majority of possession in the opening half but were finding hard to create a clear cut opening. Rovers were given a way back into the game on thirty one minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Simon Phillips stepped up and coolly dispatched the spot kick to make it 1-1. The away side had a chance just before the break but after a good run from their midfielder he failed to find the target which saw the sides go in at the break all square. The second half was much in the same vein as the first with both teams doing a lot of good work up till the final third but neither side could make their chances count. Ian Murphy in the Rovers goal pulled off two magnificent saves while a Luca Rampersaud drive forced the Barntown keeper into a full stretch save to turn the ball away. Ninety minutes failed to separate the teams and it was on to ten minutes each way of extra time. Four minutes in Ian Murphy pulled off another fantastic save to keep his team level. Sam Brown put in a couple of good crosses in extra time but Rovers failed to get on the end of them. The game petered out and it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout which Rovers unfortunately lost 4-3. This proved to be a very sporting game played in great spirit. The teams were evenly matched with both sides having chances to win it but in the end it took a penalty shootout to get a winner. On the night man of the match goes to Ian Murphy for his superb saves in normal and extra time and then another fantastic save in the shootout.
