Our under 11 white team were involved in a cracking Jimmy Hackett Shield quarter final game in Shamrock Park this morning. This is what football is all about, two teams who went onto the pitch and gave it everything in a very sporting encounter with both sidelines setting a great example of coaching and respect for each other. A good Rathnew team looked home and hosed when they led 5-2 but the young Rovers team showed great character to battle back to square matters up. Tommy Morrissey produced a stunning solo goalscoring feat firing home all Rovers five goals. The teams couldn't be seperated after extra time and it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout in which Rathnew came out on top. Rovers produced a brilliant performance. Well done to Rathnew on their victory but football was definitely the big winner here. Well done to both sides and their coaching staff who were a credit to their clubs. As a footnote l personally received a call from the referee on the day to compliment both teams and their coaches for their performances on and off the pitch, nice to hear feedback on the positive side of the beautiful game, again well done everyone in today's game.
