Our WDFL Premier team took on local neighbours Ashford Rovers tonight at a rain drenched Whitegates. Considering the inclement weather over the last few days and again tonight during the game the pitch held up well. It was Ashford who drew first blood when they went in front early in play. The Rovers of Wicklow had a lot of possession without really troubling the Ashford keeper. Ashford doubled their lead around the half hour mark. If anyone was going to get the lads back into the game it would be either of the Power brothers Jamie and Alan. Just before the break a powerful surging run down the right by Jamie Power saw him break into the area, his fierce cross was deflected into the net by an Ashford defender to give the lads a lifeline. The second half was more of the same with the home side pressing forward in search of an equaliser, they were dictating play but Ashford always looked dangerous on the break and it was from one of those breaks that they increased their lead. Ashford broke down the left and earned themselves a penalty which they duly converted to go 3-1 up. Wicklow still had a lot of the ball and with nine minutes left they pulled one back when that man Jamie Power again was the scourge of the Ashford defence firing home to make it 3-2. With two minutes left on the clock it was time for the other half of the Power duet to come to the fore. The home side were awarded a free just outside the area and Alan Power stepped up to blast home and we were all square at 3-3. The scoring wasn't over though and the home side were caught napping at the back three minutes into injury time when Ashford nabbed what proved to be the winner. It was an entertaining game on a wet miserable night but the experience within the Ashford team was the difference between the two sides on the night. It was a game in which the home team will feel they should have got something from but to Ashford's credit they kept plugging away. Jamie and Alan Power stood out for the home side and didn't deserve to be on the losing end of things.
