Our Leinster Senior side travelled to take on league leaders Skerries Town on Thursday night and when we say things didn’t get off to a good start it’s an understatement. Firstly, the lads got held up in traffic on the M50 due to a couple of accidents [not involving any of the team], then even though they arrived at 7.30pm for a 7.45pm kick off the referee wouldn’t allocate them an extra few minutes to warm up. So, it was straight into the game, not ideal preparation. The first twenty five minutes saw both sides cancel each other out with very little in the way of chances, then on the half hour mark disaster struck for Rovers. A long ball over the top deflected off a Rovers defender and fell kindly into the path of the incoming striker who tucked it away to put the league leaders in front. Rovers dominated from this point until the half time whistle but couldn’t create a clear cut opening. The home team doubled their lead just after half time when they were awarded a dubious penalty which they duly converted, a harsh decision to say the least. Things got worse when Rovers were reduced to ten men shortly after but to the team’s credit they battled on and made it difficult for Skerries. It was only in the dying seconds that Skerries added a third. On a whole the performance was good from the team against a team that are flying in the league. On the night Jim Foley, Mick Delaney, Nathan Sullivan and Tommy Smullen stood out for Rovers.
