WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th SEPTEMBER 2021
The Leinster Senior team were back in action after a bit of a break when they travelled to take on inform Rosemount Mulvey on Saturday. The lads turned in a very impressive performance to return home with all three points in a 3-1 victory. They fell behind after twenty minutes but levelled matters just after the half hour mark when Davy Rowan powered home. Just before the break Rovers were awarded a penalty and up stepped David O’Connor to coolly dispatch the ball to the net. Rovers were put under severe pressure in the second half but the rear guard of Davy Rowan, Mikey Delaney, Rikki Quinn and Dylan Orr stood firm and impressed throughout. With seconds remaining Rovers secured all three points when Dylan Orr surged into the area, rounded the keeper and slotted home number three to secure a vital win. Sam Brown was the Rovers man of the match causing untold problems for the opposition. Also, Davy Rowan, Rikki Quinn, Mikey Delaney and Dylan Orr impressed throughout.
The under 18 girls went one better than last week when they recorded a 10-2 win over Lusk United at Whitegates on Sunday. Last week they hit nine goals and then ten this week means its nineteen in two games. Molly Sweeney helped herself to a double hat-trick with each of her goals been clinically finished. Emma Waters and Aoife Caffrey both fired home a brace a piece in what was a very impressive display from the whole team. To the away team’s credit, the final result could have been a lot closer as they missed a penalty and Abi Smith in the Rovers goal made three excellent saves. In saying that Rovers were clinical in front of goal and were well deserving of their victory which sees them off to the perfect start with two wins from two.
We had one junior game during the week and that was on Thursday night when the under 12 greens secured the one point required to top the Section 1 North league table. Taking on their nearest rivals St Anthonys black they knew a draw would do with their opponents needing the win. The game ended 1-1 with a twenty sixth goal of the season for Ciaran McCaul to secure top spot for Rovers in what was a tight tense tussle. Their final record reads ten wins and a draw from eleven games, well done to Sean, Sarah and the team.
On Saturday the under 12 green team recorded a fantastic 3-0 win away to St Anthonys black at the DW Park, this was an excellent three points to kick start their premier league campaign, a brace from Liam Cawley and a single from Wolsey Sloan Kelly laid the foundations for this win in an impressive all round team performance. The 12 white team went down 5-2 away to St Anthonys white, the team battled throughout and had chances to add to their tally. Both Cian Lynch and Borja Garcia nabbed their first goals of the season for the team. An understrength 14B’s went down 7-2 to a very strong Avonmore team at Whitegates, the team battled right up to the final whistle and never gave up. Jack Lambe netted his third of the season with Tiernan O’Neill firing home his first of the campaign. On Sunday the 13A’s went down 3-2 to St Patricks of Avoca in a five goal thriller in the first game of the premier league. The lads will feel they should have got something from the game but it’s a case of moving on and hopefully next time we’ll come out on the right side. Naoise Delaney nabbed one to bring his tally to thirteen for the season with Shane O’Reilly firing home his third of the campaign.
