WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th SEPTEMBER 2021

The under 18 girls kicked off their MGL season on Sunday morning at Whitegates when they took on Lucan United. The girls were looking to get off to a good start and they certainly didn’t disappoint. If it was goals you were looking for then this was the game to be at. Both sides provided the watching spectators with a thrilling spectacle, a game you couldn’t take your eyes off. This game had everything, plenty of goals, goalmouth scrambles, well struck goals, excellent saves from the keepers and great all out attacking football. Rovers came out on top winning 9-7, an unbelievable scoreline but to both teams credit it was a fantastic game and a great advert for football, well done Rovers and Lucan. Molly Sweeney produced a stunning solo scoring feat firing home a personal haul of five goals, she was ably assisted by Aoife Caffrey and Sophie Fogarty who nabbed a brace a piece. This was a stunning performance from the girls providing everyone with an exciting encounter that has everyone looking forward to their next game. Every girl in the squad played their part, well done girls.

The junior section is now coming up to the stage of the season in which the league carry out the regrading of teams in most sections with the newly formed leagues kicking off the weekend of the 11th and 12th of September. The remaining back games were played in the last week. Midweek action saw the under 14A team welcome unbeaten Shillelagh to Whitegates and when the full-time whistle was blown the visitors left with their record intact after a 3-1 victory. Rovers put it up to the visitors but on the night, Shillelagh proved more clinical in front of goal. Jack Neville netted his seventh of the season for Rovers.

On Saturday the under 12B's entertained Glencormac United at Whitegates and unfortunately, they suffered a 6-2 defeat to a strong Glencormac team. Everyone gave their all for the team and kept going right up to the final whistle. Aiden Kelly and a fifth of the season for Charlie Gavin were the Rovers goalscorers on the day.

On Sunday the under 15’s maintained their hundred percent record with a comfortable 8-0 victory at home to Enniskerry. Jack Macklin scored the first to set them on their way and before the half-time break a bullet header from Lorcan Sinnott and a well taken brace from Brandon Battams had the lads in a commanding position leading 4-0 at the interval. The second half saw the lads dictate play and add a further four goals with Harri Armstrong firing home two, one from the penalty spot, Charlie Czwalina getting his ninth of the season and Daniel Kavanagh completing the scoring in an excellent all round team performance.

We had another large turnout for our Saturday academy, it goes from strength to strength every week and gives the kids so much enjoyment while learning the skills of football. Also, the coaches are enjoying helping the young kids kick start their football careers. The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coaches Johnny Dunne, Stephen Clarke and Jimmy Nolan. The academy takes place on the club grounds at Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.
