Our premier Wicklow League team took on Ashford Rovers tonight at Whitegates in the WDFL pre-season tournament. The Rovers of Wicklow drew first blood when Jamie Power gave them the lead after ten minutes. On twenty five minutes Ashford had a golden chance to level matters when they were awarded a penalty after a mistimed challenge, the resulting spot kick was off target and a great opportunity was spurned. In their next attack Ashford breached the Wicklow defence but the chance was blasted wildly over the crossbar. These two chances came back to haunt the away side as the home team went up the other end and doubled their lead when James Lang neatly finished to make it 2-0. Right on the stroke of half time Wicklow put the game out of reach when Andrew Earls fired home to send them in at the break 3-0 to the good. The second half saw both teams go for more goals. Both sides had a couple of half chances but failed to hit the target. Then on fifty four minutes Jamie Power got on the end of a flowing four man move but his fierce shot rattled the bar. Two minutes later the home side were awarded a free thirty five yards out, Jack Fox stepped up and fired a thunderous strike which smashed off the crossbar, a strike which deserved to nestle in the net. With twenty minutes left Jack Fox got on the end of a through ball, cut in from the left and coolly curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner to make it 4-0. Ashford pulled one back straight away but after that there were no more chances of note as the game petered out. This was a good solid team performance with some clinical finishing from Wicklow to make it two wins from two.
