Wicklow Rovers U14B side battled to a hard-fought 2–1 victory over a determined Avonmore team at Whitegates this afternoon.
Rovers who were missing a number of their first team players fell behind when the visitors struck first, taking a 1–0 lead into halftime after a strong opening 35 minutes. Rovers regrouped during the break and came out with renewed focus. The equaliser came early in the second half when Avonmore conceded a penalty for a handball in the box. Casey Brennan stepped up and coolly slotted home the spot kick to bring the hosts level.
Wicklow then turned the game on its head when Nathan Vickers capitalised on a chance at the back post, firing in what would prove to be the winning goal. Vickers continued to trouble the Avonmore defence and won a second penalty after another surging run. This time, captain Cian Foley took responsibility but was unlucky to see his powerful effort crash off the post.
As the clock wound down, Avonmore pushed for an equaliser, forcing Rovers to dig deep and defend a series of dangerous free kicks. The backline lead be the superb Davi Loboschi held firm to secure a vital three points.
Man of the Match: Nathan Vickers – for a match-winning performance, scoring the decisive goal and winning a crucial penalty.
Thanks to Avonmore for a great game – we look forward to the return leg later in the season.
