Wicklow Rovers U14C hosted Arklow United B at Whitegates this morning, and the two teams provided a thrilling match that lived up to expectations. The teams were closely matched last season, and this morning's encounter was no exception.
Rovers weathered the initial Arklow pressure and took the lead on 12 minutes when Locky Mathews burst in from the flank and hit a screamer into the top corner. Bogdan Volk doubled the lead soon after, following good play from Callum O'Flaherty. Rovers had chances to add to the lead but didn't make the pressure count. Arklow United created a number of chances of their own and hit the post just before halftime. Loukas' Karamalis was in fine form too, producing a dominant goalkeeping display to keep the visitors at bay.
The second half was just as intense, with both teams creating chances. Hugo Bradshaw scored on 50 minutes, again following another O'Flaherty cross. Dan Kelly added a fourth goal two minutes later. His initial shot was blocked and cleared. The Rovers midfield gained control again and played it back into the box, where O'Flaherty used nice footwork. He slid the ball to Kelly who made no mistake this time and buried it into the bottom corner.
Arklow fought back to reduce the deficit to 4-2, but Wicklow Rovers' defense held firm, with Loukas Karamalis making crucial saves and the defenders keeping the opposition at bay.
The team performance was outstanding, with Callum O'Flaherty and Locky Mathews standing out for their excellent play. O'Flaherty's crossing ability caused problems for the Arklow defenders, while Mathews was almost unstoppable on the pitch.
Thanks to Arklow United B for a game played in a sporting spirit, and we look forward to renewing rivalries later in the season.
