Wicklow Rovers U14C hosted Glencormac at Whitegates this morning, and the two teams provided an entertaining match in beautiful sunshine. The teams had previously played out a 1-1 draw in the league earlier this season, and this cup game lived up to expectations.
Rovers dominated possession in the early stages but struggled to create clear chances. Glencormac then grabbed a foothold and their pressure paid off when they scored from a corner kick. A looping ball wasn't dealt with at the near post and it crept over the line despite Loukas Karamlis' best efforts.
However, Rovers quickly responded, with Bogdan Volk equalizing by smashing a loose ball into the net.
In the second half, Rovers weathered the initial 10 minutes, when Glencormac were on top. Charlie O'Neill headed Rovers into the lead from a corner. He later added a third goal following persistent pressure from the midfield.
The Rovers defenders were solid throughout, limiting Glencormac to half-chances. Cian Collins, Jamie McGowan, and Finn Malone all had opportunities to add to the tally but couldn't find the back of the net.
Cayden O'Malley was named Man of the Match for his impressive work rate, which nearly earned him a goal if not for the resolute defending of Glencormac's right back, who was excellent all game.
This win is a great morale booster for the team, and they now look forward to the quarterfinals. Thanks to Glencormac for a sporting game, and we look forward to meeting again in other competitions this season.
